Your Frequently Asked Questions Answered! What is orthodontic dentistry? Orthodontics is a specialty dentistry that deals with the alignment of teeth and facial esthetics.
What are the benefits of orthodontic treatment? • A Beautiful Smile • Improved Oral Health (Crooked & Crowded Teeth Are Hard to Clean or Maintain) • Decreased Risk of Tooth Decay & Gum Disease • Improved Ability to Bite & Chew Food
At what age can a child be considered for treatment? The American Association of Orthodontists recommends screening at age 7. Most children will not require treatment until 10 to 12 years of age. However, early detection of some orthodontic problems is important in order to avoid more difficult treatment later.
Can you be too old to benefit from orthodontic treatment? No, adults can certainly benefit from braces. How long does treatment take? Treatment time typically ranges from 1 to 3 years, depending on the growth of the patient's mouth and face and the severity of the problem.
Is this going to hurt? Placing the bands and brackets does not hurt. However, you will have some discomfort for several days after the braces are placed. Over-the-counter pain relievers will usually help. Can I still play sports? Of course! It is highly recommended that our patients protect their smiles and wear a mouth guard when participating in sports-related activities.
What happens on the first visits to the orthodontist? The first appointment is usually a screening appointment. Dr. Ward will just look to see if you need and are ready for braces. Sometimes it may be necessary to take an X-ray on this appointment. If you have a recent X-ray from your general dentist, it is helpful to have it with you. If you need and are ready for treatment, your next appointment will be for records.
